Fishing Etiquette

The following are simple ways for anglers to fish responsibly.
- Use barbless hooks
- Retrieve all fishing line. Leave no line in the water, in the mangroves, or elsewhere. This kills birds, turtles, and other animals. Dispose of fishing line properly.
- Don't damage habitats
- Use good catch and release practices
- Fish with appropriate gear so you can land the fish in a timely manner.
- When possible, don't remove the fish from the water. If the fish is handled, use wet hands. Do not use a towel.
- If you remove the fish from the water, do not suspend it by the lower jaw. Hold the fish horizontally, with one have under the head and the other under the belly or near the anal fin.
- If you want a photograph of the fish, get the camera ready, talk about how the photo will be taken (position of the angler and fish), remove the fish from the water for just long enough to take the photo.
- When reviving a fish, if you need to move water over the gills, move the fish forward (not forward and backward).
