WaveSpin Reels - Field Tested

By Ed Ottenthal

Every so often a great new product is introduced to the fishing tackle industry which encompasses the true needs of fishermen. The new WaveSpin Reels that were developed by a long time fishing legend named Doug Hannon, also known as ”The Bass Professor”, do just that.

During a phone conversation with Mr. Hannon one afternoon, I asked him about the new technical concepts behind his reels and why they were different? He was more than willing to explain in detail about his reels. I basically understood his new technology and I also knew that I had to try one of his reels under actual fishing conditions to see how this new technology would hold up.

The reel I tested was a WaveSpin model DH4000z

Line Capacity/Mono/Braid

Technical Features:

With favorable conditions on the south Florida beach, I decided to target snook, one of my favorite and tough game fish. I used a uni-knot to attach my fluorocarbon leader to my 12 lb.mono [ No swivels ] and a rapala knot to attach the circle hook since I would be using live bait. The first day I netted some mullet on the beach and the snook were hungry.

September Snook caught on WaveSpin reel

I hooked and landed a 20 lb+ snook in the surf . As the fish screamed toward Bimini, I was waiting for the drag to start to chatter [as on some reels] but to no avail. It worked smooth and true, even with the occasional dunks in the salt. A few more days of beach fishing brought forth the same results: many big snook- NO Tangles! NO Problems!

I also let a couple of buddies cast into the surf with this reel and they were really impressed with the distance the line traveled. WaveSpin reels will cast about 30% farther than a traditional spinning reel and the spools can be loaded to the max.

Overall I would have to say that the New WaveSpin reels are what fishermen have been waiting for, for a long time. The reels have a superior drag system, they guarantee, No tangles or twists in the line, they have farther casting capabilities, they are salt water friendly, they can take a pounding and they come with a two year warranty- what else could a fisherman want?
